The University Career Center (UCC) inspires and supports students to transition confidently beyond the University of Michigan by creating a dynamic space to gain clarity through their process of self-discovery. The University Career Center serves about 17,000 unique clients annually, through appointments, workshops, events, career technology and its resources.

Job Summary

  • Builds, connects and maintains relationships with recruiting organizations in varied industries, developing relationships between students and employing organizations. Contributes to the efforts of the Employer Relations Team.

  • Offers support in a large, comprehensive, fast-paced, career services office with duties related to a variety of career-related and student maturation issues including self-discovery and reflection, understanding the world of work, experiential learning, tapping into social networking venues, advanced education, and job and internship search issues.

  • Fosters student learning through enhanced educational experiences/experiential learning opportunities, to guide students through all phases of their career development including actively engaging in their own learning.

Responsibilities*

Employer Relations/Recruiting Management - 50%

  • As part of a team, plan, develop, implement and manage recruiting/recruiting contacts across varied industries. Use independent analysis and judgment to consult and advise employing organizations interested in developing and implementing effective college recruitment and connection strategies to achieve a productive presence on campus

  • Cultivate and maintain long-term relationships with employing organizations. Respond to and resolve employment related issues from employers and students in a timely manner

  • Identify new employment opportunities by researching and prospecting industry, government and non-profit markets

  • Utilize the University Career Center's online recruiting platform, Handshake to manage employer relationships including job postings, campus interviews, and campus fairs and events

  • Data compilation to better understand hiring trends, student outcomes, and recruiting relationships. Research, interpret, and stay current on important trends in the collegiate hiring market

  • Host and serve as a point of contact for employers recruiting at the University Career Center

  • Cultivate relationships with students, organizations, and other University units in effort to help market the University Career Center and recruiter sponsored career exploration events

  • Seek creative opportunities to connect students and hiring organizations and/or alumni

Student Development through Direct Service - 30%

  • Foster student learning and development and enhanced educational experiences through experiential learning opportunities

  • Organize and market the University Career Center's Career employer related programs, ensuring partnerships with a wide range of industries, career interests and schools/colleges/department interests are represented

  • Support other University Career Center experiential learning initiatives including the Immersion program and Employer Challenges, by either attending immersions and/or assisting with facilitation of challenges

  • Reach out to alumni/ae and employers for prospective new partnerships under the direction of the employer relations team. Promote the University Career Alumni Network (UCAN)

  • Conduct panels, presentations, or other programming and event efforts on behalf of the University Career Center as needed across campus and in collaboration with student organizations and other University units

  • Manage the development of 1-2 UCC Career Tracks including resource development, advising students individually or in small groups, connecting with alumni/ae in the fields, and organizing panels, programs or other ways to link students with professionals

  • Utilize current technologies and information management tools, demonstrating innovative service delivery to benefit students and improve organizational effectiveness, including Handshake-the University Career Center's online recruiting platform, UCAN, Linkedin, Twitter, Google apps, blogging, Zoom etc.

  • Create a positive learning environment for all students, supporting the University's DEI efforts. Includes having an informed perspective regarding issues of race, ethnicity, gender orientation, sexual orientation, ability, and national status, as examples

  • Assist students in understanding the transferability of their academic coursework as they explore possible next steps

Supervision - 10%

  • Hire, train, supervise, and develop up to 2 student employees as needed

Career Center Team - 10%

  • Contribute to building a positive campus community that affirms and values all members, is equitable and inclusive

  • Contribute to the efforts of the Employer Relations team including staffing major recruiting events such as the Fall and Winter Job and Internship Fairs

  • Forward the mission and goals of unit and division within an established set of organizational values

  • Promote the highest standards of the profession in accordance with the principles, ethics, and standards of ACPA, NASPA, NACE, and CAS, and established good practice in Student Affairs

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor Degree

  • Minimum 1-3 years professional work experience

  • Experience in program administration, customer service, project management, advising/or facilitation, employer and/or client relations, marketing and/or development

  • Awareness of economic trends and their impact on the labor market, including understanding how the world of work is organized

  • Experience contributing to a diverse environment of colleagues and students representing diverse populations (e.g. nationality, race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, abilities, class, and other social identities)

  • Familiarity with information management tools (e.g. databases, Excel, Google apps, online forms, and other software)

  • Comfort and interest in marketing and social media

Desired Qualifications*

  • Knowledge of UM campus and diverse range of students and student organizations

  • Familiarity with or past participant in a job shadow, externship, or internship program

  • Demonstrated skill in working with students and engaging in group process and programming

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a large, complex, fast-paced office that serves over 18,000 students annually.

  • Ability to provide service within an office that places a high value on quality customer service, team orientation, intentional planning, continuous improvement and puts students at the center.

  • Ability to effectively integrate technology and innovation into service delivery.

Working conditions

  • Willingness to travel for University Career Center events.

  • Must be available some evenings or weekends for unit related work.

Selected candidates whose start date is after 4/1/2024 or before 8/31/2024 will not be eligible for the university FY 24-25 salary/merit plan unless otherwise notified.

This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.

Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of the selected candidate.

Relocation will not be offered for this position.
