Interior, US Fish and Wildlife Service Ecologist in Anchorage, Alaska

Summary This position is a Ecologist, GS- 0408-11 working in Anchorage, Alaska for the R7-Branch of Refuge Fire Management. Responsibilities As a Ecologist your duties will include but are not limited to the following: Serves as the Assistant Regional Program Ecologist and technical advisor for fire ecology and monitoring for the National Wildlife Refuge System. In cooperation with appropriate staff, researchers, and partners, the fire ecologist develops and implements scientific monitoring protocols to identify, evaluate, and monitor ecosystem response to fire management activities and the ecological process of wildland fire. Manages all aspects of monitoring design, data collection and management, analysis, and reporting related to fire ecology and monitoring. Incorporates research and monitoring results into fire management planning and implementation activities. Writes fire monitoring documents that define monitoring techniques and develops methods for future refinements of protocols. Conducts sampling to determine statistically valid plot distributions and design. Performs and oversees data collection and data entry and carries out quality control checks on data collection and entry performed by others. Conducts analysis of complex data related to fire weather, behavior, history, and effects. Determines and documents the significance of findings. Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team, planning and contributing to the development of land management plans, fire management plans, compliance documents, and agreements. Provides professional expertise in the development of strategies and objectives for wildland fire and post-fire activities when there are competing social, political, fiscal and resource concerns. Utilizes monitoring and other feedback mechanisms to improve planning and decision support documents and processes. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Only experience and education obtained by 06/03/2024 will be considered. In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification. Basic Requirement: Degree: biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences. NOTE: Transcripts required. OR A combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major or at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences, PLUS appropriate experience, or additional education. The quality of the combination must demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of the position and is comparable to that normally acquired through the completion of a full four-year course of study with a major as described above. Minimum Qualification [GS-11] A. I have one full year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience may include: 1) assist in compiling, analyzing, and interpreting of ecological or hydrological data using current and appropriate statistical and modeling techniques; 2) conducting field evaluations and status surveys for both listed and candidate species; 3) developing sampling designs for ecological survey and monitoring efforts; 4) preparing biological assessments, technical reports, and publications. I have successfully completed 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a discipline directly related to the position. I possess a combination of qualifying specialized experience and qualifying graduate education (both as described above) that, when computed as percentages of their respective requirements, equals at least 100% when combined.
