This position is located in Alamance County in the Graham Resident Engineer’s Office. This Engineering Technician III position will serve as a lead project inspector and will support higher level engineers in the administration of medium-to-large highway construction projects. Monitors daily progress of projects and resolves constructability issues to maintain project schedules. Direct and schedule the work of technicians in staking out and inspecting every phase of a construction project to ensure it is built according to plans and specifications in a timely and cost-effective manner. Manages all aspects of assigned construction projects with limited supervision from high level engineers. May supervise and train multiple technicians, including Department employees and contract inspectors. Must be able to document and take corrective action and apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. Ability to complete daily diaries, survey notes and other record keeping items manually and electronically. Be able to perform construction related mathematical calculations. Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing related to this position. Ability to establish and maintain positive lines of communication between other technicians, engineers, contractors, and the general public. Work involves independent decision making and use of judgement.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Additional Expectations:

Employee must be able to lift 40 to 50 pounds, work in high traffic areas, and work at heights over water or traffic, work in extreme temperatures and traverse uneven terrain. May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as necessary. Safety toe shoes are required. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
