The Engineer 3 - PDM Design Drafting prepares or directs preparation of product or system layout and detailed drawings, assembly drawings, and schematics by coordinating with designers, drafters, or other engineers, interpreting customer and functional requirements, or by using engineering computer-aided design tools and following industry and/or military drawing standards. Develops critical data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, notes, and documentation necessary to present design proposals to customers.
Reviews drawings and layouts to ensure clarity, completeness, form, fit, functionality, and conformity to standards, procedures, and specifications. Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and directs revisions and improvements to engineers or other designers.
Provides leadership to offshore team. Establishes goals and objectives required to complete projects. Shares specialized knowledge with others. Trains and mentors less experienced team members.
Refines and enhances products and processes by applying continuous improvement principles and techniques in design and manufacturing areas. Recommends actions by analyzing and interpreting data and making comparative analyses. Analyzes proposed changes in methods and materials.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing technical publications, benchmarking best practices, and/or participating in professional associations.
Consistently applies established engineering practices, standards and documentation methods.
Represents company on high-level projects with the customer. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed. Work assignments may include cross-functional or project team responsibilities (e.g., continuous improvement).
Job Core Responsibilities
The experienced team member is responsible for applying standard principles, theories, concepts and techniques in providing solutions to a variety of problems, to include using GD&T and applicable drawing standards as a reference.
Coordinates offshore contracting team assignments through onsite project manager.
Must demonstrate the ability to efficiently apply standard industry techniques, methods and criteria to the solution of engineering problems.
Must also possess sufficient knowledge of plant operations to obtain and integrate services of other groups whose participation is essential to successful accomplishment of assignments.
Assignments at this level are moderately complex but are normally guided by precedence. A principal challenge is in matching available methodology and/or support functions with particular assignments.
The ability to work through, and often lead, a solution to open-ended problems within a cross-functional team. Assignments are customer-centric, where customer may be external or internal.
Organizes, interprets, and reports results with little guidance. Works under general supervision with occasional reviews during performance of the work.
Planning of assignments is normally performed with concurrence of the manager. Final reports and results are approved by the manager for soundness of technical judgment and overall accuracy and adequacy.
Within the company, interfaces daily with manager, other department team members, other engineering departments, program and project managers, quality assurance, and manufacturing, to help solve problems involving obsolescence, design changes, and manufacturing processes and costs, enabling the cross-pollination of design ideas/technical know-how.
Contacts at a higher level are infrequent, except during new product development (NPD). Program reviews, for example, require contact with positions such as the BSD Division Managers, GM, and their equivalents at the customer (both OEMs and airlines).
Create final assembly, subassembly, and component models and drawings to customer design utilizing CAD.
Convert customer layouts to final assembly manufacturing drawings.
Prepare bills of materials and specification when drawings are complete.
Ensure the initiation, accuracy, and maintenance of Engineering / Production Change Notices.
Interpret drawings for assembly and manufacturing.
Recommends changes to refine and enhance processes by applying continuous improvement principles and techniques.
Carries out special duties as assigned.
Up to 10% travel.
Job Specifications
Education: Bachelor degree required. Prefer Mechanical, Aerospace, or Electrical Engineering degree.
Years Experience: 12+ years
Skills:
Good planning, organizational, analytical, leadership, interpersonal, decision-making, problem-solving, oral, and written communication skills are required.
Understanding of product hierarchy and structure (i.e., top-level assembly, through subassemblies, through detailed components, to source control drawings for suppliers) is required.
Customer-facing experience is required.
Previous experience coordinating offshore team members and contractors is required.
Demonstrated 3D modeling capability of complex mechanical components (wheels, brakes, valves, sensors, electromechanical actuators, etc.) is required.
Knowledge of SAP, SmarTeam, CATIA V5 and MS Office is required.
Knowledge of Enovia 3DEXPERIENCE is preferred.
Experience with model-based design (MBD) is a plus.
