U.S. Air Force Academy PHYSICAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTOR (Rock Climbing) in Air Force Academy, Colorado

Responsibilities Position will perform faculty duties in the Department of Athletics, United States Air Force Academy. Will teach undergraduate courses in Physical Education, serve as an Assistant Lifetime Sports Area Coordinator, supporting the Physical Education Rock Climbing program, through management and maintenance of all equipment and facilities needed to safely administer the Rock Climbing course, maintain national Climbing Wall certification for instructing students and maintaining climbing wall facilities and equipment, perform assigned departmental duties and participate in course and curriculum development. Instructs cadets in undergraduate Physical Education (PE) courses. Prepares course material according to published course descriptions and delivers well-organized instruction to facilitate student learning. Counsels and evaluates assigned cadets, as appropriate. Effectively provides student assessment and motivation. Serves as course director when required by the Department of Physical Education. Leverages expertise in academic and course specialty in one-on-one and small group sessions to diagnose the root cause of student academic challenges and provides targeted extra instruction to enhance learning. Communicates with course directors and Department of Physical Education on observed trends in student performance. Supports and performs duties as Assistant Area Coordinator for Lifetime Sports under the direction of the Lifetime Sports Area Coordinator. Assists in the management of the physical education rock climbing program, to include, but not limited to: organization and implementation of the rock climbing curriculum and course materials, proficiency training of rock climbing instructors, establishing grading criteria, ensuring student attendance is reported properly, ensuring all facilities and equipment are professionally maintained and ready for the beginning of every class, and ordering and maintaining all supplies and equipment needed to properly administer the rock climbing program. Effectively ensures the professional conduct and performance of the instructors in the lifetime sports portfolio and the cadet rock climbing course, including the safety, suitability, and professionalism of the instructional rock climbing facilities and equipment. Maintains all rock climbing equipment, to include, but not limited to: ensuring the serviceability, cleanliness, and safety of rock climbing harnesses, hardware, and belay ropes as prescribed by manufacturers' operating and maintenance instructions, and properly repairing and/or replacing all rock climbing equipment to ensure correct mechanical functioning and safety. Responsible for the cleanliness and organization of the rock climbing gym. Performs a variety of administrative functions, as required, to ensure the timely and effective offering of physical education lifetime sport courses and athletic programs. Keeps abreast of current training and coaching methods to ensure the most innovative and effective methods are being used. Participates in faculty governance by attending department and faculty meetings and serving, where requested, on departmental committees. Provides appropriate advice and counsel to improve the quality of educational/athletics programs. Maintains the professional and ethical standards of the USAF Academy. Proactively embraces the USAF Academy Core Values, Institutional Outcomes, Character Development Outcomes, and USAF Academy regulations and operating instructions. Accepts responsibility as a role model and mentor to the cadets in their courses and programs. Maintains memberships in appropriate professional organizations, attends conventions, maintains liaison with others in the field including military and civilian universities, and follows new developments to stay current with coaching and teaching techniques. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum requirement is a Bachelor's Degree. Master's degree preferred. ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES: N/A DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Three years experience teaching Physical Education and/or instructing Rock Climbing at the collegiate level and Current Climbing Wall Instruction (CWI) highly desired. Candidates will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching. Leadership experience in curriculum development and academic assessment is desired. Applicants will be assessed based on education, evidence of teaching effectiveness, quality of scholarship, and demonstrated service to educational institutions and the discipline commensurate with years in the discipline.
