These vessel diseases can lead to heart attack, stroke, critical limb ischemia and other serious vascular conditions.

The vessel closure (VC) department within Abbott Vascular’s (AV) R&D team is currently seeking to hire a Senior Product Design Engineer.

This position represents a key role within AV’s R&D team and will focus on the mechanical and industrial design of both new and existing on-market products, expanding AV’s existing VC product portfolio.

The successful candidate will have the responsibility for delivering the design aspects of new product development programs to meet AV’s strategic objectives and customer expectations.

This is a hybrid work position. AV’s Clonmel site will be the primary AV site at which the successful candidate will be based.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

You will Lead the Clonmel-based VC R&D team with regards to product design activities relating to both new and on-market VC products

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and provide product design focused technical direction to cross-functional teams

  • Liaise with stakeholders and senior management to ensure successful delivery of R&D programs

  • Liaise and work effectively with core team members within R&D, Marketing, Clinical Engineering, Human Factors and other critical partners internally and externally, ensuring expectations and deliverables are clearly understood

  • Ensure timely delivery of R&D programs

  • Be the lead voice within the VC R&D team from a product design perspective with regards to planning for and execution of complex product development programs, from the point of conception through to launch.

  • Manage product builds and testing as required throughout the execution of R&D programs

  • Prepare for and lead cross-functional team design and technical reviews with members of AV’s senior management team, ensuring all required data and deliverables are present, complete and robust

  • Develop and source appropriate materials and technologies for medical device design and construction

  • Provide product design focused guidance and technical direction to R&D program team members

  • Generate and maintain technical documentation in-line with AV’s Quality Management System and relevant regulatory requirements

  • Build and develop product design knowledge and capability within AV’s VC R&D team

  • Ensure that state of the art design solutions are incorporated into product development activities

  • Provide regular input, updates and direction to AV staff of varying levels of seniority on technical topics and issues

  • Perform other related duties and tasks as required

Education and Years Experience:

  • National Framework of Qualification (NFQ) Level 8 qualification in product design related discipline with 5+ years related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience

  • Proven track record of successfully leading product design and development activities from conceptualisation through to point of commercial launch.

  • Good working knowledge of medical device materials and processes

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Solidworks

  • Significant working knowledge of technologies available for prototype design and generation

  • Demonstrated analytical problem-solving abilities

  • Demonstrated people management skills and experience.

  • Strong interpersonal and organisational skills and the ability to work effectively as a team lead and team member.
